Studio Laboratory 3 Site: Shoreham by Sea.

Shoreham-by-Sea a place of flooded Carmelite monasteries, forgotten film industries, salt works, airports, forts, harbours, forgotten passenger ships to distant shores, life boat stations. Sited at the mouth of the river Adur, that blurring of boundaries, sea, river, saltwater, freshwater, past, present, land, sea, Shoreham is our site for the year. On Tuesday we visited the Marlipins Museum, a treasure trove of information on Shoreham’s rich history, the building itself dates from the twelfth century. We met some of the museum’s voluntary custodians who shared their knowledge with us and then walked to see the famous light quality at Shoreham beach that drew the film industry here. We explored Shoreham’s town, its nature reserve and 900 year old Church, beginning our individual journeys. Upon return studio members presented their chosen Artefact, a memento from the site to hold up to the light as a guide for future research.
