International Women’s Day – 8th March 2021

International Women’s Day – 8th March 2021, following a very challenging year since the last International Women’s Day, the theme for 2021 is “Choose To Challenge”.

The opening of the annual “Female Firsts” exhibition happily coincides with SoAD’s partial reopening of facilities to students after the recent lockdown. We are pleased to announce there are five new faces in this year’s “wall of women”, two of which achieved their firsts in 2021.

Carol Ann Duffy – First female UK Poet Laureate (2009)

Kathryn Bigelow – First female Best Director Oscar winner (2010)

G.S. Lakshmi – First female International Cricket Council match referee (2019)

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala – First female Director General of the World Trade Organisation (2021)

Kamala Harris – First Female US Vice President (2021)

Curator Claire Hoskin is often asked if she has a favourite from among the women but with 62 contenders in this year’s exhibition it’s a difficult choice. If pushed she would probably have to choose Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space. As her spacecraft left the launchpad she shouted into her headset “Hey sky, take off your hat, I’m on my way!”.

Happy International Women’s Day and we wish you all the best in meeting the continuing challenges of 2021.
