SG3’s site is a slice of Lewes Road, Brighton. Rather than giving the studios a particular site to work with they have been asked to investigate the moments along this strip of Lewes Road that interest them – this could be side roads, disused spaces or ‘awkward marginal sites that often go unnoticed’ as Lauren Scally says. Exploring these interstitial spaces as a first point of reference for the site analysis allows the students to be more open to sites they might not have been given if allocated a building immediately.
This way of surveying a site is also a great way of getting to know the area, it’s people, places and stories. As the students continued to explore the area they noticed more and more of these ‘Terrain Vague’ areas in which to base their understanding of their surroundings.
