The collaborative making of things, situations, events and experience is of great interest to Studio 14, so Lead Tutor Stephen Ryan was asked if he would become involved with the design and installation of a temporary bar for the Graduate Show at the new Edward Street building. Principal designers and makers for the project were four students from second year BA Interior Architecture: Jessica Hunt, Alicja Kwiatkowska, Sotiroulla Mouis, and Aaron Reynolds.
The design concept was agreed as: a ‘neutral heavy dark object’, with distinctive spatial sculptural qualities – using silhouette and shadow with the existing lighting; not specifically designed as a bar yet able to effectively function as a bar, and be stored for reuse, in other locations. It was thought that its relatively ‘minimal’ appearance would allow it to still look good when not in use as a bar, and offer scope for adaption, and for alternative future use.
The design evolved as it was being built at Mithras House, and was further adjusted when installed on Thursday 2nd June. We received many compliments on the design which was thought to work successfully within the spatial design of Edward Street, the new home for courses in Photography, Media, and the Moving Image.
