Nick Hayhurst Wins AR Prize

Part 3 course leader, Nick Hayhurst has won the Architectural Review’s prize for Best School Project. His Practice, Hayhurst & Co have transformed the South London school through carefully inserting new elements that stitch together the original Victorian school with the later 1970s buildings.

These elements include striking ceiling lines internally and the distinctive copper-clad entrance. The phased build – 6 years in the making – shows that slow evolution of building design can ensure a nuanced and thoughtful refurbishment. It’s clever and fun. Hopefully the next generation will grow up to be more aware of the positive impact good design has on our environment and outlook.
