Barnaby Thornton wins 2019 James Latham Award for Innovation in Timber.

University of Brighton’s School of Architecture and Design are delighted to announce the prize winner for the 2019 Lathams Award for Innovation in Timber was Barnaby Thornton (studio 66, Undergraduate Architecture) for his project’s engagement with timber as part of a circular economy.

Stuart Devoil, Head of Marketing from the specialist timber suppliers James Latham PLC commended Barnaby’s poetic and innovative use of timber veneers for light transmission and technical resolution of his modular timber social hub structure… and wonderful models to support the project’s development and final resolution. In view of what was considered to be an exceptional group of student projects, an additional runner-up prize of £100 was awarded to Harry Horwood from studio 06 Undergraduate Architecture.

In judging the award with other shortlisted students, Yee Chin (Interior Architecture); and Matthew Chung, Natasha Periera and Josh Wiseman, (Undergraduate Architecture), Stuart commented on the exceptional standard of work which made selecting the winners for the award an especially difficult task.
