This Year Dolam Gurung represented the University of Brighton Undergraduate Architecture course at the Women in Property awards. Dolma was invited to exhibit her work at the national prize giving event London. Sophie Yetton (Dolma’s first year Studio Tutor) and Libby Blundell (Second Year Coordinator/Studio Tutor) went along to support her. The evening is in part a networking event, for students, where Dolma has over the past nine months (at the regional event also) has had the opportunity to meet peers in courses within the construction industry and to discuss the challenges that may face them as women entering the professions.
The event celebrates student work, and presentations of second year students within the construction industry; including amongst other professions surveyors, planners, commercial and project managers. During the evening students discuss their work informally with other attendees and potential employers, enabling them to build confidence. One of the sponsors was particularly impressed with the creativity demonstrated in Dolma’s drawings and sketchbooks.
One of the criteria that event organisers and judges consider during the competition is the confidence with which students present their work and respond to panel interview. Reflecting on the event Dolma recognised the value in have conversations around the challenges within the professions and suggested that it would be good to bring these discussions into the university, around women in practice but also the ‘softer’ side of practice, working ethics, Human Resources and the sphere of practice to better prepare, and equip students to respond to the challenges of the working world.
