Congratulations to Studio 12 student Ellen McCullough for winning a regional heat at this years Women in Property Awards. This high profile scheme involves 48 universities and 96 students throughout England, Wales and Scotland. Ellen was one of the top ten highest marked female students to be interviewed by a Regional Judging Panel. The interviewers consider the candidates’ personal skills rather than academic, professional potential, and understanding of the industry and then score participants against specific criteria.
Having attended the interview and the prestigious ‘Best of the Best National Awards Dinner’ Ellen had this to say.
“The Women in Property Award scheme aims to help female students in the construction industry build their networking skills and offer work opportunities within their particular field. I was nominated this year to participate in the Regional Awards which was a valuable experience as I made several contacts and gained more confidence about my work.
At the start of the process, I attended an interview with a panel of judges in the construction industry and presented my second year portfolio. I received feedback on my interview which helped me identify my strengths and weaknesses during my presentation. Later in the year, I attended a networking and awards evening with a CV workshop. This event allowed me to interact with other students studying construction based courses and I acquired contact details for possible placements in the future.
It is a great opportunity to build your networking skills as an introduction to the professional working environment and I would recommend other students to participate. If you get through this first stage you are awarded £300 and receive help with gaining a paid summer placement. You then go on to the National Awards where you compete against the other regional winners across the country; given the opportunity I would definitely try it again”
