The first project undertaken by Studio 07 students was the exploration of materials and light. The challenge was to make a lamp shade, but instead of focusing on imagining the outcome, the process, not the end goal was the focus. Pushing materials to their edge, finding out what happens when you make a mold – of a mold – of a mold, and learning the essential skill of recording everything that happens, especially the failures and mistakes. As Scott Adams said ‘Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes’. The resulting work by the students was varied, from paper folded geometries, to plasma cut copper, twisted wood, plasters of drain pipes and concrete cones.
